Request Credit Reports Directly From the Credit Bureaus

I recommend that anyone thinking about bankruptcy should obtain current copies of their credit reports from all 3 credit bureaus - Equifax, Experian and Trans Union.  Federal law allows you to obtain copies of your credit reports at no charge every year.

If you leave a creditor off your bankruptcy, that debt may not be discharged.  Further, credit reports will often give you the name of a collection agency or debt buyer - information that you want to include in your bankruptcy petition.

Usually you can get your credit reports online at AnnualCreditReport.com.  However this online system requires you to answer a variety of questions to confirm your identity and sometimes the system will prompt you to request your credit reports by mail.  Here are the forms you need to do this:
